What Is a Gap Statement?
A gap statement (also called a "research gap" or "gap identification") is a paragraph or section that:
Names what the existing literature has NOT done
Explains why that absence matters
Positions your study as the solution
It appears near the end of your literature review, right before you state your research questions or hypotheses.

Example 1: Education
Context: Master's thesis on mindfulness for student stress (from the example above)
Despite strong evidence for MBI effectiveness among general university populations, two gaps remain. First, most studies have focused on domestic students at English-speaking universities, leaving the effectiveness of MBIs for international students — who face additional stressors including language barriers and cultural adjustment — under-examined. Second, while MBIs have been studied extensively with undergraduates, first-generation college students remain an under-researched population despite facing unique academic stress related to navigating unfamiliar institutional systems. This thesis addresses the second gap by examining the effectiveness of a 6-week mindfulness intervention specifically for first-generation college students at a mid-sized public university.

Example 2: Business / Management
Extensive research has examined the relationship between transformational leadership and employee performance (Judge & Piccolo, 2004; Wang et al., 2011). More recent work has explored how this relationship operates in remote work contexts (Kniffin et al., 2021; Toscano & Zappalà, 2020). However, these studies have focused exclusively on full-time permanent employees. The growing population of gig economy workers — who lack the job security and organizational embeddedness of traditional employees — has not been examined in relation to leadership style effects. This gap is significant because gig workers now constitute 36% of the U.S. workforce (BLS, 2023), and their performance may respond differently to leadership approaches designed for traditional employment contexts. This study addresses this gap by examining how transformational leadership behaviors affect gig worker performance in the ride-sharing industry.

Example 3: Psychology
The relationship between social media use and adolescent depression has been documented extensively (Keles et al., 2020; Twenge et al., 2018). Longitudinal studies have established that increased social media use predicts later depressive symptoms (Boers et al., 2020; Orben et al., 2019). However, these studies have measured social media use as a unidimensional construct — total time spent — without distinguishing between passive consumption (scrolling without interaction) and active engagement (commenting, posting, messaging). This distinction matters because theoretical models suggest passive consumption may be more strongly linked to social comparison and depressive symptoms, while active engagement may provide social support (Verduyn et al., 2017; Valkenburg & Peter, 2009). No published longitudinal study has examined whether passive versus active social media use differentially predicts depression trajectories in adolescents. This study fills that gap using a 3-year longitudinal design with 1,200 adolescents, measuring social media use type at 6-month intervals.

Example 4: Computer Science / AI
Automated program repair (APR) techniques have achieved substantial success in fixing bugs in open-source Java projects (Le Goues et al., 2012; Martinez & Monperrus, 2016). Recent deep learning approaches have further improved repair accuracy (Lutellier et al., 2020; Jiang et al., 2021). However, these techniques have been evaluated almost exclusively on single-bug scenarios — projects where one bug is fixed at a time. In real-world software development, developers routinely encounter multiple interrelated bugs that must be fixed simultaneously. No existing APR system has been tested on multi-bug repair scenarios, and it remains unknown whether current techniques scale to interdependent bug fixes. This research addresses this gap by developing and evaluating the first multi-bug APR framework, tested on a benchmark of 500 interrelated bug pairs from the Defects4J dataset.

Formula 1: The Population Gap

Common Gap Statement Mistakes

Before finalizing your gap statement, check
Does it acknowledge what the literature HAS done? (You can't say "nothing exists.")
Does it name specifically what's missing? (Population? Method? Context? Concept?)
Does it explain WHY that missing piece matters?
Does it lead directly into your research questions or study design?
Is the scope appropriate for your level? (Master's = narrower gap; PhD = more ambitious gap)
