Most psychology students can recognize a good literature review after reading one. The harder task is recognizing a weak version while writing it: a paragraph that lists studies, relies on isolated findings, reports no effect sizes, and ends with an unsupported statement that “more research is needed.”

Paragraph 1: Establishing the Phenomenon
Poor Literature Review Example
Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are a popular way to reduce anxiety in young people. Smith (2018) found that MBIs reduce anxiety in a sample of adolescents. Jones (2019) also found positive effects. However, a recent study by Brown (2021) found no effect. Therefore, the results are mixed. More research on mindfulness and anxiety is needed, especially with young people.

Stronger Literature Review Example
Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have gained empirical support for reducing anxiety symptoms across adult populations, with meta-analytic evidence reporting an overall effect (Goldberg et al., 2018; Khoury et al., 2015). However, reported effect estimates for adolescent samples are smaller than those reported for adults, suggesting that the mechanisms associated with MBI outcomes may not transfer uniformly across developmental stages (Carsley et al., 2017; Zoogman et al., 2015). While experimental evidence has examined reductions in ruminative thought as a possible pathway, cross-sectional work has reported that self-reported mindfulness is only weakly associated with anxiety outcomes after accounting for comorbid depression [verified sources required]. Taken together, the evidence does not yet establish a clear, developmentally specific causal account.

Proposed explanations include small samples, limited use of active control groups, and reliance on self-report measures without physiological corroboration (Dunning et al., 2019; Klingbeil et al., 2017).

If that evidence gap is confirmed, a study could use meta-regression to examine school-based MBIs for adolescents aged 12–18 and test intervention components as moderators of anxiety outcomes.

These are diagnostic signals, not universal rules. A single primary study may be appropriate for an emerging question, and an effect estimate is meaningful only when interpreted with its measure, confidence interval, design, population, and context.

When summarizing an established phenomenon, check whether a current systematic review or meta-analysis is available.
Report magnitude responsibly.
